AI search and AEO

Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)
Answer Engine Optimization is the practice of getting a business named when someone asks an AI assistant such as ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity for a recommendation. Instead of ranking in a list of results, the goal is to be one of the two or three names the assistant returns.

How businesses get recommended

Answer engine
An answer engine is a tool that responds to a question with a direct answer rather than a list of links. ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and Gemini are answer engines. They synthesise from sources they can retrieve and trust, and usually name only a handful.
Structured data
Structured data is machine-readable code added to a page that states plainly what the page and business are, using an agreed vocabulary called schema.org. It does not change what a visitor sees. It lets a search or answer engine describe you without having to infer.
Entity
An entity is the thing a search or answer engine believes your business to be, assembled from every source it can find about you. When those sources disagree, confidence drops and the engine is less likely to name you.
Server-side rendering
Server-side rendering means the content exists in the HTML the server sends, before any JavaScript runs. It matters for AI search because GPTBot, ClaudeBot and PerplexityBot do not execute JavaScript, so anything added by script is invisible to them.

Does SEO still matter

Citation share
Citation share is how often a business is named across a fixed set of buying questions asked of answer engines. It is the closest equivalent to a ranking report for AI search, and it is measured as a rate across repeated runs rather than a single position.

How to measure it

Search and local

Search Engine Optimization (SEO)
Search Engine Optimization is the work of making pages discoverable and rankable in search results. It covers the technical foundation that lets a page be crawled and indexed, the content that answers a query, and the signals that suggest the page is trustworthy.
Local pack
The local pack is the map result with three business listings that appears for searches with local intent. Placement is driven mainly by proximity to the searcher, relevance to the query, and prominence, which is largely reviews and reputation.
Google Business Profile
A Google Business Profile is the free listing that controls how a business appears in Google Maps and the local pack. Its category, description, services and reviews are what Google reads when deciding whether the business is relevant to a local search.
NAP consistency
NAP consistency means the business name, address and phone number are identical everywhere they appear online. Inconsistent details reduce an engine's confidence in the business as an entity, which suppresses it in local results and AI answers.
Canonical tag
A canonical tag tells search engines which URL is the authoritative version of a page when the same content can be reached more than one way. Without one, ranking signals can be split across duplicate addresses.
Schema markup
Schema markup is the specific vocabulary used to write structured data, published at schema.org. Types relevant to a service business include Organization, ProfessionalService, Person, FAQPage and Service.

Leads and follow-up

Speed to lead
Speed to lead is the time between an enquiry arriving and the business making genuine contact. For expensive services the buyer is usually contacting several providers at once, so the first credible response often sets the terms the rest are compared against.

Why speed decides it

Lead nurture
Lead nurture is the structured follow-up that continues after the first contact, for people who did not buy immediately. It matters most where the decision is slow, such as remodeling, solar or choosing an adviser, because most enquiries are not ready on the day they arrive.
Marketing automation
Marketing automation is software that performs follow-up actions without someone remembering to. In a service business it typically answers enquiries instantly, sends reminders, and keeps a sequence running for months, which no small team does reliably by hand.
CRM
A CRM is the system that stores every lead and the history of contact with them. It is what makes it possible to report on which advertising produced booked clients rather than only on how many enquiries arrived.
Attribution
Attribution is the assignment of a booking or sale to the marketing that produced it. It is always imperfect, because buyers touch several channels and some influence is invisible, so it should be treated as directional rather than exact.

Business terms

High-ticket service business
A high-ticket service business is one where a single new client is worth roughly $1,500 or more and the sale needs a conversation rather than a checkout. Roofing, legal, insurance, real estate, medical and financial advisory all qualify.

What it means for advertising

Customer lifetime value (LTV)
Customer lifetime value is the total profit expected from a client across the whole relationship, not just the first purchase. It matters most where work repeats or renews, because it raises what you can afford to pay to win that client.
Growth audit
A growth audit is a structured review of existing advertising, tracking, pages and lead handling, aimed at finding where money is already being lost before any new budget is added. A real one produces specific fixes you could act on without hiring anyone.

What one should cover

Flat-fee pricing
Flat-fee pricing means the agency charges a fixed amount rather than a percentage of advertising spend. It removes the conflict of interest in which the agency earns more when it recommends you spend more.
