Why Meta ads stop producing results

Why Your Facebook Ads Aren't Working (and How to Fix It)

Invalid Date

Meta ads usually stop working for one of five reasons: broken or missing conversion tracking, an audience the algorithm cannot optimise toward, creative fatigue, a landing page that does not match the ad, or leads that are arriving and not being worked. Check them in that order, because the first two invalidate everything downstream.

Most businesses start by changing the creative, which is the most visible lever and rarely the actual fault. Working through the list in order saves months.

Is your conversion tracking actually working?

Check this before anything else. If the platform cannot see which leads turned into customers, it optimises toward whatever it can see, which is usually cheap form fills from people who will never buy.

Broken tracking does not announce itself. Campaigns keep running and results degrade slowly, which is why it is so often discovered months after it broke.

Are you optimising for the wrong event?

Optimising for leads teaches the platform to find people who fill in forms, which is not the same as people who buy. Where volume allows, optimise toward a qualified lead or a booked appointment instead.

This single change is often the difference between a campaign that produces activity and one that produces revenue.

How do you know if it is creative fatigue?

Fatigue shows up as rising cost with stable targeting and falling engagement on creative that previously worked. It is real, and it arrives faster in small geographies where the same audience sees your ads repeatedly.

The fix is a steady supply of genuinely different creative, not small edits to the same concept.

Does your landing page match the ad?

If the ad promises something specific and the page is a general homepage, most of the traffic you paid for leaves immediately. The mismatch is one of the most common and most fixable causes of poor results. See landing pages versus your website.

Are the leads being worked at all?

Before blaming the campaign, measure the time between form submission and first genuine contact. In a large share of cases the ads are performing and the leads are going cold in an inbox, particularly evenings and weekends.

See answering leads fast enough. It is the least glamorous fix available and frequently the largest.

When is the answer that Meta is wrong for you?

Rarely, but it happens when your service is bought only at a moment of urgent search, such as emergency repair. In those cases search captures demand better, and Meta is the wrong tool rather than a broken one. See Google versus Meta.
