How to Get Your Business Recommended by ChatGPT and Gemini
You get your business recommended by ChatGPT, Gemini and the other AI assistants by being an unambiguous, verifiable entity they can describe with confidence: the same name, address, phone and category everywhere you appear, structured data that says plainly what you do and for whom, pages that answer the exact questions buyers ask, real reviews on your Google Business Profile, and third-party sources that repeat the same facts about you. Then you make sure both Google and Bing have actually indexed those pages, because that is where the assistants read from.
When someone asks an assistant for a recommendation, it does not return ten blue links. It names two or three businesses and moves on. That compression is the whole strategic problem: there is no page two to be found on. This guide covers how each assistant decides, what each one reads, and what to do in the next 30 days, in the order that moves the needle.
How does an AI assistant decide who to recommend?
It assembles an answer from sources it can retrieve and trust, so it favors businesses that are described consistently in several independent places. Confidence, not popularity, is what gets you named, and confidence comes from corroboration. A business that describes itself one way on its site, another way on its business profile and a third way in a directory is a business an assistant will hedge about or skip in favor of a cleaner match.
In August 2026 we ran 63 buying questions through Perplexity, ChatGPT and Google's AI Overviews and logged who was named and which sources each engine cited. Three mechanisms decided every answer, and they map to three kinds of question:
- Local questions ("best marketing agency in Suwanee") are answered from Google Business Profile ratings. ChatGPT renders a map panel and every business shown carried a 4.8 to 5.0 rating. A profile with no reviews is not in the set, whatever the website says.
- Attribute questions ("agencies that charge a flat fee", "agency that lets me keep my ad account") are answered from the vendors' own pages. Ten agencies appeared for the flat-fee question and every one was cited to its own pricing page. A page that states the fact as a number gets in.
- Category questions ("best med spa marketing agency Atlanta") are rebuilt from third-party lists: Clutch, The Manifest, Expertise.com, chamber directories, and self-published comparisons, which the engines cite as readily as independent ones.
So the practical order is reviews first, then one page per checkable attribute, then a disclosed comparison in your category. The full study is in how ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI choose a marketing agency.
What does each AI assistant actually read?
Each assistant answers from a search index plus its own crawler, and they do not all use the same index. ChatGPT search and Microsoft Copilot read Bing's index. Gemini and Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode read Google's index and Google Business Profile. Perplexity runs its own crawler and leans on third-party lists and forums. If a page is indexed by Google but not by Bing, ChatGPT cannot cite it no matter how good it is.
That last point is the one most businesses miss. We measured it on our own site: Google had indexed 49 of our pages while Bing held 25, and the posts Bing had not yet crawled never appeared in ChatGPT's answers. Bing Webmaster Tools is free, takes ten minutes to set up, and is the single most neglected step in getting recommended by ChatGPT.
How do you get your business recommended by ChatGPT?
Get into Bing's index, let OpenAI's crawler in, and publish pages that state checkable facts in plain sentences. ChatGPT search answers from Bing results and from pages its GPTBot crawler has fetched directly, so both doors have to be open.
- Verify your site in Bing Webmaster Tools, submit your sitemap, and submit new URLs the day you publish them. Bing crawls small sites slowly (one to four pages a day in our case), so a post can sit unindexed for weeks if you wait.
- Check robots.txt allows GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot and ChatGPT-User. Many security plugins and CDN bot-protection defaults block them, and a blocked crawler means an invisible business.
- Put the direct answer in the first two sentences of every page. ChatGPT quotes the sentence that answers the question, not the paragraph that warms up to it.
- State facts as numbers and nouns: your price, your service area, your turnaround, who you serve. "Flat fee from $1,500 a month, Gwinnett County" gets cited; "transparent, affordable pricing" does not.
- For local questions ChatGPT shows a map panel built from Google Business Profile ratings, so the Google reviews step below applies to ChatGPT too.
How do you get your business recommended by Gemini and Google AI Overviews?
Win Google first. AI Overviews and AI Mode almost always cite pages that already rank on page one for the question, and Gemini answers local questions straight from Google Business Profile. So for Google's assistants the work is a complete, verified, well-reviewed Business Profile plus pages that rank for specific questions.
- Verify your Google Business Profile and fill every field: category, services, hours, service area, a real street address, and photos. An unverified profile is invisible to Gemini for local questions.
- Collect reviews steadily. In our study every business ChatGPT and Gemini named for a local question had a rating between 4.8 and 5.0, and businesses with zero reviews never appeared.
- Write one page per question buyers actually ask, with the answer first. Google's generative-AI report in Search Console shows which of your pages are being pulled into AI answers; in our first month of question-shaped posts it showed 70 AI impressions across 20 pages.
- Add Organization, LocalBusiness, Article and FAQPage structured data that repeats the same name, address and phone as your profile. Google uses it to confirm the entity it is describing.
- Name a real person. Pages with an author who has a title, a profile page and a LinkedIn link are cited more readily than anonymous brand pages.
How do you get recommended by Perplexity and Copilot?
Copilot is Bing, so everything in the ChatGPT section applies. Perplexity is the engine most driven by third-party corroboration: it cites comparison lists, directories, Reddit threads and trade publications ahead of a vendor's own site. To be named there you need other people describing you the same way you describe yourself.
- Get listed, with consistent details, in the directories your category actually uses: Clutch, The Manifest, Expertise.com, your chamber of commerce, and the trade association for your industry.
- Publish a disclosed comparison of your own category ("12 agencies compared, here is how we chose"). Engines cite these as readily as independent lists.
- Allow PerplexityBot in robots.txt, and keep the same facts on every listing. A different phone number on one directory is enough to make an engine hedge.
What makes a business easy for AI to describe?
One consistent name, address, phone number and category everywhere; structured data that states plainly what you do, where, and for whom; pages that answer real buyer questions directly rather than in brand language; third-party mentions that repeat the same facts; and a named human being associated with the expertise. None of this is exotic. It is the same discipline as being easy to describe to a person who is recommending you.
Does being recommended by AI require being a big business?
No, and this is the genuinely good news for smaller businesses. Assistants answering a specific local or niche question have a small pool of relevant sources, so a focused business with clear content often beats a large competitor whose content is generic. Specificity beats size. A page that answers exactly what someone asked will be used ahead of a broad services page from a bigger firm.
What content actually gets used in AI answers?
Content that answers the question in the first few sentences and can be lifted without surrounding context. If a paragraph only makes sense after reading three paragraphs before it, it is hard to quote and tends not to be. Tables, numbered steps and sentences with numbers in them are quoted far more often than prose, because they survive being pulled out of the page.
Practically: put the direct answer first, keep it self-contained, and structure the page around real questions rather than marketing headings. That is the same principle described in AEO explained for medical practices, and it is why SEO still matters with AI search: the assistants are reading the same pages Google ranks.
Do reviews and reputation matter for AI recommendations?
Yes, heavily, because they are third-party corroboration and assistants lean on sources that are not you. A business with no reviews is asking to be taken on its own word, which is the weakest possible position when something is deciding who to vouch for. For any question with a place name in it, reviews are the gate: the map panels ChatGPT and Gemini show are built from Google Business Profile ratings, and every profile we saw in those panels had a 4.8 or better with dozens of reviews.
How long does it take to get recommended by AI?
Expect two to three weeks before a new page can be cited at all, and one to three months before you are named consistently. The lag is indexing: Bing crawls small sites a few pages a day, Google usually takes days to a couple of weeks for a new post, and the assistants can only cite what the index holds. Reviews and directory listings take effect faster than content because the profiles they live on are crawled constantly. Do not judge a new page inside two weeks of publishing it.
How do you know if any of this is working?
Track it deliberately, because it does not show up in ordinary rank tracking. Assistants do not report positions, so measurement means asking the same set of buying questions every month and recording whether you are named, plus three free reports: Search Console's generative-AI performance report (which pages Google's AI features showed), Bing Webmaster Tools' crawl and index counts, and a GA4 channel that groups visits from chatgpt.com, gemini.google.com, perplexity.ai and copilot.microsoft.com. The setup is in how to know if AI search is sending you customers.
The 30-day checklist
In order of payoff. The first four take an afternoon.
- Week 1, entity: make name, address, phone and category identical on your website, Google Business Profile, Bing Places, Facebook, LinkedIn and every directory you are listed in. Fix the website first, then the profile, then the rest.
- Week 1, indexing: verify Bing Webmaster Tools, submit the sitemap, and check robots.txt allows GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot and Google-Extended.
- Week 1, reviews: verify the Google Business Profile if it is not, and ask your five happiest customers for a review this week. Keep asking, two a week, forever.
- Week 2, structured data: add Organization or LocalBusiness schema with the same details as the profile, and Article plus FAQPage on every guide.
- Week 2 and 3, attribute pages: one page per checkable fact a buyer would ask about (price model, service area, contract terms, who owns the ad account, turnaround). Answer in the first sentence, with a number.
- Week 3, corroboration: get listed in the three directories your category uses most, with identical details, and publish one disclosed comparison of your category.
- Week 4, measure: run your question set through ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google, record who is named, and read the Search Console AI report. Then repeat monthly.
What we measured in August 2026
Across the 63 questions, local answers were decided by Business Profile ratings, attribute answers by the vendor's own page, and category answers by third-party lists. Google's AI Overviews named a business first when it was the only one with a page answering that exact question. How the local half works is in how AI decides the best marketing company near me, how a Georgia business gets into Google's AI answers is in how a local business gets named in Google AI Overviews, and the scan we run first is in what the AI Visibility Scan measures.
Engage Ads builds paid advertising, AI search visibility and lead follow-up as one system for high-ticket service businesses in Gwinnett County and north metro Atlanta.
