What is answer engine optimization?
Answer engine optimization, or AEO, is the practice of making a business readable, verifiable and quotable to AI assistants, so that it is named when someone asks one of them for a recommendation.
It is sometimes called generative engine optimization, or GEO. The two terms describe the same work. Where traditional search hands a buyer ten links and lets them choose, an answer engine reads the web on the buyer's behalf and returns a short answer containing a handful of names. There is no page two. Either your business is in the answer or it does not exist for that question.
That changes what the work actually is. Ranking is about competing for a position. Being cited is about being the clearest, most consistent and most corroborated source on a topic, in a form a model can lift without ambiguity.
How is AEO different from SEO?
SEO competes for a position in a list and is rewarded with a click. AEO competes to be the source a model quotes inside one generated answer, and is rewarded with a recommendation.
| Dimension | Traditional SEO | Answer Engine Optimization |
|---|---|---|
| Goal | Rank in the top ten results | Be named inside the generated answer |
| Unit of success | A click | A citation or recommendation |
| Who reads your site | Googlebot, which executes JavaScript | GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, which do not |
| Content shape | Long pages built around keywords | Passages that answer one question completely |
| Structured data | Helpful for rich results | Load bearing, and it must render server-side |
| Off-site signals | Backlinks and domain authority | Corroboration: directories, reviews, independent mentions |
| Entity facts | Minor ranking factor | Decisive. Conflicting facts suppress you outright |
| Measurement | Rank position and organic traffic | Citation share across a fixed prompt panel |
The row that surprises people most is the third one. Most modern websites build their structured data with JavaScript, which is fine for Google because Google renders pages. The crawlers behind ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity generally do not. If your schema only exists after JavaScript runs, it does not exist for them at all.
How do AI assistants decide who to recommend?
Far less from your website than you would expect, and far more from what other sources say about you.
We test this continuously against a fixed panel of buyer-intent prompts. The pattern is consistent: when an assistant is asked to rank service providers in a city, it justifies almost every position with independent evidence such as a directory rating and a review count, not with anything published on the provider's own site. Businesses without that independent evidence get described in hedged language, or left out of the list and mentioned afterwards as an alternative.
The practical order of operations that falls out of this is:
01Consistent entity facts
One name, one address, one phone number, one description, everywhere the business appears. A company publishing three different phone numbers across its own site and a directory is not a business an entity resolver can confidently identify, and confidence is what gets you into an answer.
02Independent corroboration
Directory profiles, verified reviews, industry listings, press mentions. This is the layer most businesses skip and it is the layer that decides ranked answers.
03Machine-readable facts on your own site
Server-rendered structured data describing what you do, where you do it, what it costs and who runs it. This is table stakes rather than an advantage, but its absence is disqualifying.
04Answer-shaped content
Pages built so that a single passage answers one question completely, without needing the paragraphs around it for context. Models extract passages, not pages.
Where AI already puts us
We test our own visibility the way we would test yours: run the question a buyer would actually type, record what comes back, and date it. Here is a live result from 31 August 2026, unedited.
“… local providers like Engage Ads that handle Gwinnett County dental PPC and social ads on flat monthly fees.”
Google AI Overview · 31 Aug 2026 · two of the three sources Google cited were engageads.io
Two things are worth saying plainly, because most agencies showing you a screenshot will not say them.
01Position moves between runs.
We ran that same question twice in one afternoon. Once we were the first agency named, once we were the second. AI Overviews are regenerated per query, so anyone promising you a fixed rank inside an AI answer is selling something that does not exist. What is stable is being one of the two or three names that comes back at all, and being a source the model cites.
02Being the cited source is the harder win.
In that result Google showed three source cards. Two of them were pages on engageads.io. Being quoted as the evidence behind an answer is what carries over when the wording changes, and it comes from structure and published data rather than from luck.
03We publish where we do not appear, too.
Our own 95-check study across 63 buyer questions found Engage Ads on Google and ChatGPT, and nowhere on Perplexity. We did not appear for “Atlanta digital marketing agency” either, and we tell clients to stop paying for that phrase. The method and the misses are published, not just the wins.
What we actually do
AEO is not a content package. Most of the work is unglamorous correction of facts and plumbing, followed by content built to a specific shape.
01Entity and NAP audit
We crawl every page you publish plus the places the web already talks about you, extract every phone number, address and business name, and find the ones that disagree. Conflicts inside structured data on legal pages matter most, because that is where resolvers look for authoritative contact facts.
02Server-rendered structured data
Organization, service, offer, pricing, area served, FAQ and breadcrumb markup that is present in the raw HTML, so it is readable without executing JavaScript. We verify by fetching your pages as GPTBot and ClaudeBot and reading what actually comes back.
03Answer-shaped content
Question-headed sections with the answer in the first two sentences, definitions that match their structured-data equivalents word for word, and comparison tables, which are disproportionately quoted.
04Corroboration
Directory profiles built and kept consistent, a review process your team can actually sustain, and original data worth citing. Nothing here is a trick, because the whole mechanism depends on independent sources genuinely agreeing.
05Citation tracking
A fixed panel of buyer-intent prompts, run repeatedly, reported as a rate rather than a yes or no, because model answers vary between runs. You see which sources the assistant cited, and those sources become the next work list.
We do not sell guaranteed placement in AI answers, and you should be sceptical of anyone who does. No one controls what a model returns. What is controllable is whether the facts about you are consistent, machine-readable and independently corroborated, and those are the inputs that decide it.
The AI Visibility Scan
Every engagement starts with our AI Visibility Scan: a 0 to 100 score of how AI assistants actually see your website, run against your site and your closest competitors.
The scan fetches your homepage as GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot and Bingbot and compares the words each crawler can read against what a browser shows. That bot-parity check carries 30 percent of the score, because it is a gate: most Wix, Squarespace, React and GoHighLevel sites render in the browser, so an assistant sees a near-empty page and cannot cite it no matter how good the content is. Structured data is weighted 22 percent, on-page fundamentals 20, name-address-phone consistency 15, crawlability 8 and speed 5.
You get the score, the same score for two or three competitors, and a prioritised fix list. It is included in the no-cost growth audit, so you know what is broken and what it costs to fix before you commit to anything.
Why hire us for this
Because our own site is built to the standard we sell, and we publish original data rather than reciting industry averages.
676
ENT patient inquiries at $16.65 each
<$17
Average cost per inquiry
$16.75
Cost per inquiry, chiropractic, same structure
Most agencies selling AEO fail the test on their own domain. Ours does not. Every page on engageads.io carries organization, service, offer, pricing, FAQ and breadcrumb markup in the raw HTML, and a definition set of twenty-nine marketing terms whose visible text matches its structured data word for word. You can verify all of it by fetching the pages as GPTBot yourself.
We also publish the 2026 Georgia Medical Practice Advertising Benchmark, built from our own campaign data, with every third-party figure carrying a publisher, sample size, period and source URL. Original data is the most-cited kind of content there is, and it is the one thing a competitor cannot copy.
The 676 inquiries at $16.65 and the $16.75 chiropractic figure are taken directly from the Meta advertising API for two unrelated client engagements in the north Atlanta metro; both count inquiries, not booked patients. Results reference specific verified engagements and are not a guarantee of future performance.
What does AEO cost?
AEO and SEO run as one system on the Foundation plan for a flat $1,500 per month on a 12-month term ($1,800 on six months), or together with Meta ads and automation on Growth Engine for a flat $2,500 per month ($3,000 on six months). Never a percentage of your ad spend, and the term is yours to choose: six months or twelve.
We normally run answer engine optimization alongside paid advertising and lead follow-up rather than selling it on its own. The reason is practical: visibility that arrives at an intake process nobody answers does not become booked clients. If the follow-up is already solid, we are happy to scope AEO by itself.
You keep ownership of your accounts, your data, your creative and your CRM. Nothing is held hostage if the engagement ends.
Frequently asked questions
Does AEO replace SEO?
No. They share most of the same foundations, and a site invisible to Google is usually invisible to answer engines too. AEO adds three things ordinary SEO does not prioritise: structured data that renders server-side, entity facts that agree with each other everywhere, and content written so a single passage stands as a complete answer.
How long does it take to work?
Technical fixes are readable by crawlers within days. Corroboration takes weeks to months, because it depends on third parties adding profiles and reviews at their own pace. We report citation share monthly so the trend is visible rather than anecdotal, and we do not publish a fixed timeline, because retrieval behaviour changes as models are updated.
Can you guarantee we appear in ChatGPT?
No, and neither can anyone else. What we can do is make every input that decides it correct: consistent facts, machine-readable structure, and independent sources that agree. Treat a guarantee of AI placement as a reason to walk away.
Which businesses benefit most?
Those where the purchase is considered, expensive and researched, and where buyers ask an assistant for a shortlist instead of clicking through ten results. That means home services and roofing, legal, financial advisory, real estate and insurance, medical and dental practices, and med spas. For impulse purchases the payback is much weaker and we will tell you so.
Do we need to rebuild our website?
Usually not. Most of the work is adding structured data, correcting conflicting facts and reshaping existing content. A rebuild only becomes necessary when a platform physically cannot render structured data server-side, which does happen, and we check before recommending anything.
How do you report on it?
Monthly, in three parts: citation share across the fixed prompt panel, which sources the assistants cited when they answered, and what changed on the corroboration side. If a number moved we show you which work caused it. If nothing moved we say that too.
Do you work outside Georgia?
Yes. We are based in Suwanee and most clients are in the Atlanta metro, including Norcross, Peachtree Corners, Buford, Suwanee, Johns Creek and Alpharetta, but the work is remote and location-independent apart from the local search components.
What happens in the free audit?
We fetch your site the way an answer engine does, check what your structured data actually says, look for conflicting facts across the web, and run a short prompt panel for your category to see whether you are named at all. You get the findings in writing whether or not you hire us.
