Checking whether AI search is sending leads

Is AI Search Sending You Leads? How to Check in 20 Minutes

September 24, 2026

Yes, you can know. AI assistants pass a referrer when someone clicks a link in an answer, so the visits show up in Google Analytics under sources such as chatgpt.com and perplexity.ai. The work is in three checks: finding those visits, making sure they are people, and following them into your CRM to see whether any became customers.

Step 1: Find AI referrals in GA4

  1. Open GA4, then Reports, Acquisition, Traffic acquisition.
  2. Change the table's primary dimension to Session source.
  3. Add a filter: Session source, matches regex, and paste the pattern below.
  4. Set the date range to the last 90 days and add Key events as a column.
chatgpt\.com|openai\.com|perplexity\.ai|claude\.ai|gemini\.google\.com|copilot\.microsoft\.com|meta\.ai|you\.com

On engageads.io the last 90 days showed 529 sessions in total and 14 from chatgpt.com. That is normal for a young site, and it is the baseline we now measure against every week.

Step 2: Make sure the visits are people

Bots inflate traffic reports, but not evenly. On our own site, sessions from Instagram's and Facebook's mobile apps had engagement rates of 3 and 0 percent across 56 sessions, the fingerprint of link-preview fetchers and instant bounces, while chatgpt.com visitors engaged 43 percent of the time with 44 seconds on page.

For a sharper answer, tag every page view with a human signal. We use a small Google Tag Manager tag that labels each visit as human (it scrolled, moved the pointer, tapped, typed, or stayed 12 seconds in focus), bot (webdriver, headless or crawler user agent, no screen) or no signal, and sends that label to GA4 as a custom dimension. Filter any report by Visitor Quality equals human and the bots are gone.

SignalLabelWhy it works
navigator.webdriver is truebotSet by automated browsers such as Selenium and Playwright
User agent contains bot, crawl, headless, previewbotCrawlers and link-preview fetchers identify themselves
Scroll, pointer movement, touch or key presshumanScripts that load pages rarely interact with them
12 seconds visible and focusedhumanA reader who never touched anything is still reading
Hidden or gone within 30 seconds, no interactionno signalMostly bounces and background fetches

Step 3: Follow the visit into your CRM

Traffic is not the goal. A lead is. Make sure every form on your site passes the page source and UTM values into your CRM, and add a field for how the person heard about you. When someone writes "ChatGPT" or "asked Google's AI" in that field, you have proof no analytics report can give you. Many AI-influenced buyers never click at all: they read the answer, then search your name, so they show up as direct or branded search visits.

What if the numbers are zero?

Then the assistants are not naming you yet. The usual reasons are few or no Google reviews, no presence on the directories assistants read, and no page that answers the exact question a buyer asks. The fixes are in how to get your business recommended by AI assistants, and you can test where you stand with our 25-prompt AI visibility test.

Common questions

How do I see ChatGPT traffic in Google Analytics 4?

In GA4 open Reports, Acquisition, Traffic acquisition, change the dimension to Session source, and filter with a regular expression that matches chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com, copilot.microsoft.com and claude.ai.

Does Google AI Overviews traffic show up separately?

No. Clicks from AI Overviews and AI Mode arrive as ordinary Google organic traffic. Search Console now has a report on generative AI features, but in GA4 they cannot be separated.

Is AI referral traffic real people or bots?

Clicks from chatgpt.com or perplexity.ai are almost always people, because a person has to click a link in an answer. The crawlers those companies run do not execute analytics tags. The bigger bot problem is in social and direct traffic, which a human-signal check exposes.

How many AI referrals should a local business expect?

Early on, very few: most local sites see a handful a month. Volume grows when the business is named in answers for the questions buyers ask, which depends on reviews, directory listings and pages that answer those questions directly.
