Google Ads vs Meta Ads for Medical Practices: Which First?
Start with Google if patients already search for your service by name, like implants, LASIK, or an ENT consult. Start with Meta if your service is elective and demand has to be created, like injectables, body contouring, or veneers. Google captures existing intent and converts fastest; Meta generates new demand and compounds. Most practices should run both, in that order.
They do two different jobs
Google and Meta are not two versions of the same thing. Treating them as interchangeable is the most common reason a medical ad budget underperforms.
Google captures demand that already exists. Someone typing "dental implants near me" has decided they want the procedure and is choosing a provider. Search meets them at the moment of intent and converts it fast.
Meta creates demand that does not exist yet. Nobody wakes up searching for a procedure they have never considered. A strong before-and-after in front of the right local audience is what plants the idea. That is slower and less immediately measurable, and it is where most elective volume actually comes from.
Start with Google if your demand already exists
Lead with search when patients look for your service on purpose.
High-intent and researched procedures: implants, orthodontics, LASIK, ENT and oral surgery consults, dermatology for a specific condition. People search these by name.
You need bookings quickly. Search can produce booked appointments within days because it is capturing existing intent rather than building it.
Your market is competitive on search but you can compete on offer or speed to lead. Winning here is often less about outbidding and more about answering faster.
Start with Meta if you have to create the want
Lead with Meta when the procedure is elective and visual.
Aesthetic and quality-of-life services: injectables, laser, body contouring, veneers, clear aligners, cosmetic dermatology. Demand for these is created, not captured.
Strong visual proof exists. Before-and-afters, real results, real faces. Meta rewards creative that stops the scroll, and aesthetics is one of the few categories where the proof is inherently visual.
You are building a market position, not just filling next week. Meta compounds. The audience you warm up this quarter books over the following ones.
Why most practices should run both
Run in isolation, each channel underperforms. Google converts the demand that exists but does nothing to grow it. Meta grows demand but lets high-intent searchers slip to whoever shows up in search. Together, Meta creates and warms demand, search captures it at the moment of decision, and follow-up automation books it before it cools. That is the machine; a single channel is one part of it.

Frequently asked questions
Which is cheaper, Google or Meta ads for a medical practice?
Meta usually has a lower cost per lead because it reaches people earlier, before they are actively shopping. Google often has a higher cost per lead but higher intent, so a larger share book. Compare them on cost per booked, paid patient, not cost per lead, or you will systematically misjudge which is working.
Can I run just one channel to start?
Yes, and many practices should, to keep it manageable. Pick based on whether your demand exists (Google) or has to be created (Meta), prove it produces booked patients, then add the second.
Do Google and Meta have different medical advertising rules?
Both restrict how you can target and what you can claim about health outcomes, and both require care to stay HIPAA-compliant, but the specifics differ. A default pixel or tag on either platform can expose protected health information if it is not configured for a medical context. More on that in what HIPAA-compliant medical advertising actually requires.
How fast will each channel produce patients?
Google and local search ads can produce booked appointments within days. Meta and answer engine optimization compound over weeks to a few months. Expect quick wins from search and steadier, larger volume building from Meta.
